Baked French Toast with Streusel Topping

One thing that I love to cook above all is breakfast. If I could eat breakfast for every meal I would. There are so many different ways to make the same dish and so many flavors you can play with.

Now with this dish, you can make it with or without the streusel topping. I have done without (here) and decided that this time I would try a little something different. That is where the almond streusel topping came in.

Baked French Toast
1 loaf Challah bread or any thick bread (your choice)
3 cups 2% milk
3 eggs
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon vanilla

For French Toast:
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter. Arrange bread in two tightly-packed layers in the pan. Whisk all the ingredients together and pour over the bread. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Now you can either make the dish the night before and let all of the custard soak in overnight or you can prepare the dish about an hour before and let it soak in the refrigerator. I did the overnight soaking. (Do not add streusel topping till just before baking.)

For Streusel Topping:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 tablespoon brown sugar
pinch of salt
4 tablespoons butter (melted)
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine all ingredients and then sprinkle over french toast.

Bake at 375 for 30 minutes, or until puffed and golden. Enjoy with syrup!

K (my loving and wonderful husband) wanted me to tell you – if you like sweet food you should eat this with syrup. If you do not, you should eat it without. The choice is yours!
